Environmental Sustainability
As part of its research processes, Cubist uses silicon, various acids, bases, gases, and solvents, which have the potential to generate hazardous wastes. Cubist's on-site wastewater pretreatment system neutralizes acidic and alkaline wastewaters from these byproducts of its research operations in compliance with Massachusetts Water Resources Authority effluent standards. Cubist's chemical storage facilities employ containment systems that reduce the risk of environmental contamination. In addition, Cubist has implemented emergency prevention and preparedness procedures and a written contingency plan to deal with releases and other emergencies involving hazardous waste.
Cubist has also implemented a variety of "green" initiatives, including a company-wide recycling program for general waste and a recycling program for bottles that contained chemicals used in the laboratories. Cubist recently adopted a program introduced by NSTAR to convert to higher efficiency motors used in its laboratories.
